This Lynn Chadwick Sculpture is part of the Norfolk and Norwich Arts Festival 2018. Three giant beasts “The Beast” by the famous British sculptor Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003). And the project is part of the Sainsbury Centre’s 40th-anniversary celebration. Their stretched, crouched or resting postures are described by welded stainless steel faceted geometric planes.
Completed late in Chadwick’s career. The Beasts continues a theme he began to explore in the early 1950s. The characters and animals caught up in various states of motion. And he described it as capturing “attitude”. He saying: “I call it attitude… The way the neck is bent or the attitude of the head, you can actually make something almost talk”. And he created two works for the British Festival. They positioned in the public spaces of post-war cities and new towns.
